Christian, I may have the answer (s) you're looking after. After studying the marriage record of Manuel and his birth record, I realised the wording used was specific.
Manuel's baptism the key word is "*Esposados*". This means they were *engaged to be married*. As a result he is not a "legitimate" son. I checked through the marriage records after Manuel's birth and there is none. Manuel's marriage record: It reads he's the son of Antonio Machado but it does not say and of "sua mulher/his wife". It states only the mother's name. So the priest knew who the father was and entered into the record. Later on, that practice was disallowed. The reason Manuel's children only state the grandmother Rosa Maria is simply because the father didn't legalize him as his own son. He must have gone back to S. Jorge or gone elsewhere.
