Christian,

I'll gladly help but I'm not clear on what you're looking for.

Based on the emails content it is not clear to me who you are trying to
trace. In any case I found Manuel's birth record which matches the
marriage record link you posted. And, it tells all about Antonio Machado.

To shed some understanding on the term ausente:

It was because they usually went elsewhere to find work It could be on the
same island or across the 9 islands.

One observation is that around this period there was a lot of movement
within the islands. My own GGGF from Graciosa with his S. Jorge bride to
be, went to S. Miguel along with hundreds of other man from the Western
islands (Pico, S. Jorge, Faial) in a government action to "occupy" the
island S. Miguel and mark presence there due to unrest and the civil war,
or to defend interests. Some took their wives, some didn't.

Also if the person was absent/away outside of the islands the priest would
name i.e. America, Brasil, etc.

Are you looking for Manuel and his father Antonio's line? Is this the
right couple? bottom right.

It reads:

das Neves of Norte Grande island of S. Jorge and Rosa Maria married and
natural in this Parish church of our Ladty of Guadalupe, residing in
Camacho. Paternal Grandpaents Matheus (Mateus) Nunes and his wife Luisa

Maria do Rosario, both deceased. Born on the 5th day of the month of May
of 1800 and baptised in this same church on the the 10th of the said month
and year by the Reverend Priest Joao Ignacio (Inacio) de Bettencourt, Cuir
of the said church. Godparents Manuel Jose Medina and his wife D. Julianna
(Juliana) residents of the same Camacho and to acknowledge i wrote this
record and signed it with the witnesses the baptising Reverend Priest of
this same church Francisco Jose de Bettencourt and the present witnesses.
