Louie's right, find all the US documents you can first.  

You may already have seen these, but Eva's marriage:

has her father as "Manuel E. Gomes".  Assuming that Eva's family was also 
located in Modesto, and that her father died there or thereabouts, then 
there are at least two possible leads for his death dates.  Despite the 
discrepancy in the dates, I suspect these are for the same man :
