The Baha'i Studies Listserv It seems like you are arguing about things which really aren't hard and fast issues. On the one hand, if you have a small group of people in society who have all or most of the political power (i.e. an oligarchy) then you could definitely argue that they are, by definition, the elites. On the other hand, I can sort of imagine that in some societies (including the U.S.) the military can act as a kind of equalizer which provides resources and advancement for people who would otherwise have a hard time being successful.. things like the G.I. bill come to mind... still, if you have a military junta running an oligarchy it still seems like you have a group of people (officers) who are at the top of a large hierarchical structure where they tell people what to do and that still sounds pretty elitist.
