You have a point.  But there really isn't an exact correlation between 
western chanting and eastern chanting either.  Traditional western 
chanting is far more limited/structured than is eastern chanting, and 
the best examples of western chanting involve materials writen 
specifically for that purpose.  

Oral interpretation, on the other hand, is very unstructured and 
involves some degree of interpretation.  But in the hands of the very 
best interpreters, the musical qualities are very strong.  In English, 
the best public readers are those who use oral interpretation 
techniques.  As some one has noted, they can evoke an emotional 
response that the average reader can not.
