As far as I can tell, it depends on the data, and I believe, it depends on whether you have certain international characters in it. You may have noticed some extra code added to the barrybackup GUI program, in gui/src/BackupWindow.cc, BackupWindow::treeview_update(), that checks that the number of records retrieved equals the number of records that the device reported. If you can get this piece of code to trigger (and people have done it) then you've reproduced the issue. Someone in the NetDirect office here actually reproduced it once, but I was just too busy to look at the data in detail.
