Someone mentioned at a meeting that there was a better and lesser version of IMAX. Can someone point me to one of the better ones, hopefully in the SCruz or SW South Bay area?
IMAX theaters don't tell you what version IMAX projectors they're using, digital or film. It's that simple. Except in purpose-built facilities, it's probably IMAX Digital projected on a conventional screen. Even then there are different standards for IMAX film projection (which is why the Tech IMAX can't do IMAX 3D). IMAX film is actually higher resolution than the paired Christie 2k DLP projectors used for IMAX digital.
Unfortunately, IMAX Digital is a bit muddy in the darks, and this is compounded by polarizer 3D systems.
Try to find a venue that's upgraded to Sony CineAlta 4k SXRD projectors with RealD XLS. SXRD projection technology produces better definition in the blacks than DLP. AMC, Regal and Cinemark are upgrading their theaters to CineAlta 4k projection. Camera has upgraded several auditoriums at the Camera 7 (Pruneyard) to CineAlta 4k (we saw District 9 there, and it was amazing) and is upgrading 3 auditoriums in the Camera 12 (Downtown SJ) to CineAlta 4k.
