How did you get it to happen? Is it in a new release? I almost always have BBEdit open in my Powermac and my iBook and I've never had a problem.

The limit apparently is set at 2 machines, and the OP used 3 machines at the same time.

I agree with the OP that searching the local network for the same key can be annoying at times, especially if *you* know that the real user is just *you*. I wonder if the user name could be used: connect the license key to a particular user name (long & short), because that is presumably the same for one user on various machines. Avoid giving out licenses for "Guest" users.

However, there must be a balance between user flexibility and Bare Bones' commercial interests (my list of feature requests is still too long, I really want them to continue for a little longer ;-). On the whole, I think that Bare Bones found a reasonable balance (desktop/ laptop), but the OP obviously disagrees.
