The radio on/off switch does not control access to the PCIe device. There is 
nothing in any of the
drivers that would have disabled BIOS support.

You should check to make sure that your computer has the same bridge devices as 
your wife's machine.
One of them could have malfunctioned. You should also compare the dmesg output 
line by line.
