----------------------------------------------------------- New Message on BDOTNET
----------------------------------------------------------- From: VinodK [TLabs, SCT] Message 13 in Discussion Hi NetPointer, Thats should have been on another thread ... And that is yet another interesting problem ... I did have some ask me this question is various forms earlier sometime at various places ... These are my views on the problem in hand ... >> 2. storing XML Storing and manipulating XML datatypes in SQL Server is somthing I donot prefer and recommend. This is NOT the place. The middle tier is better-off doing this activity. And the overhead of using XML from SQL Server is very very less. Yet you can also avoid this by using SQLXML client side capabilities that will transform the same automatically at the webserver ... I prefer this model just because you can build a solution agnostic of the data-tier. Hence it allows you to build a generic solution and leave the XML transformation work to SQLXML from the record sets... Another overhead is incurred in such approach, it is the verbose to represent a single data item with two tags ... This increases the network traffic. In an intranet scenario this is fine. I donot support the same if the SQL Server is on a remote location. Now doing string manipulation at the ASP/WEB layer is somthing that is very costlier .. And I would surely support the approach of getting XML and then using the same without much of transformation ... And use direct comma separated if the UI wants that way ... And I personally feel that you need to see the memory + processor footprint both at the Web server and the SQL Server to derive at an optimal solution ... I hope I have made it clear out here ...
