I am glad you are happy with jconsole and vi.

I am amused that you say the mysteries of the IDE pass you by. If you didn't know that the ijs window was a text edit window that was loaded with ctrl+w then you can't have spent more than a few minutes tackling those mysteries. Your apparent conclusion seems a tad unfair. Given that many new users to J are unfamiliar with vi and consoles and that the J IDE has strong similarities to those for C, C++, VB, Java, etc, I think it is a good thing that we provide the J IDE in addtion to the old tried and true tools.

You are correct, I make almost no use of the IDE - only
for showing other people (I don't try/intend to inflict vi
on anyone...) an running demos and labs.

As I have said in the past - the reason I eschew the IDE is
because of the way the session history is "managed" and the
strange key combinations for copy/paste etc. Remember that
I don't use a Windows machine at all (I did have a variety
of them around the house, but not a single one is in working
condition as I write this -- this loss of all Windows access
was a pretty direct result of trying to install a more
modern Linux on some older machines (funny how this PC stuff
requires buying new hardware all the time....)

I agree that the IDE is a good thing, especially for new
users - I only wish that it was somewhat more "compatible"
with other applications in my environment. I cannot really
speak to IDE's for C, C++, VB, Java etc. but the behavior
of jIDE is very alien to all the other applications I use
in the native Darwin windowing environment.
