Whether software programs are documents, is probably philosophical. Coersing is relative as you turn the tables. Compromise is when all the parties are equally dissatisfied.
It's essential to find a common solution that will work for most people and makes most sense. What was said earlier about Windows is actually only true for XP. In Vista it's the same as on Mac and Linux. (on Linux I never used Documents and not sure they exist at all). So placing j-user under home will work uniformly on all platforms (with a small reachabllity sacrifice on aging XP, which I am happy to endure for consistency). Note: Cmd-Q is not a command but a menu shortcut for Quit. In J, Quit also happens by closing session, with (x) button or menu/Cmd-W on session window. So again, for consistency it should behave the same on all platforms, whichever solution is taken. On the other hand, in my ~/Documents/ folder I have things that are pictures, and binaries (e.g. databases, financial files, etc.) I even have a few M$ Word .doc files - but they are in the minority :-) I think "Documents" is a rather generic monicker and would even contend that most developers might call their source (and perhaps even object/binary) files "documents"... Actually, most development files are more of a "document" than Word files (which are rather messy binaries). Of course, one is always welcome to add new folders at ~/ -- my complaint is being coerced to create ~/j602-user ... Of course, I can hack profile.ijs (and already do for a private profile) to put j602-user where I want - that seems to work nicely, so I won't complain too much about it. As far as making "Confirm Quit" configurable, seems a bit silly to me. I side with Roger (when he bristles at being asked if he really wants to trash something :-) - joey At 11:23 -0800 2007/11/04, Oleg Kobchenko wrote: Documents on Mac are not the same as My Documets on Windows. The latter contains My Pictures, My Music etc. Whereas Mac has those directly under user folder, which is easily accessible from Finder. So you can think of j-user as My Pictures. Whereas Documents is for actual documents like Word. For example I put other programming stuff under ~/MacDev etc, not Documents/MacDev, because dev is not documents. Maybe its time to put Confirm Quit in Configuration? Location of profile.ijs is fine where it is in j602/bin/. Seems easy to arrange a custom profile for the system. There is some problem with an administrator dropping j602.app into the /Applications/ folder. It works fine for other admin users, but a non-admin user gets "... cannot open the application "j602" because it may be damaged or incomplete" --- Running from the .dmg or j602 folder in the non-admin's session works fine. The symbolic link to jconsole works for admin or non-admin users from a Terminal session (nice). My main complaint/annoyance is that when I do Command(apple)Q, I'm asked to verify that I want to quit. I don't like to be asked ... By the way, in j601 that worked the way I want as an admin user, but non-admin users are asked to verify -- this may have some connection to 602 not working for non-admin users when in /Applications/. The new j icon is very pretty, but a little big (maybe that is good :) Things are looking very nice, minor tweaks would make it even nicer. - joey At 10:03 -0800 2007/11/04, Oleg Kobchenko wrote: User profile is not terribly inaccessibly, however "My Documents" would probably be better. Especially for relocated My Documents, which is often mapped to share in corporate setting, and can be directly changed by user in Explorer. My Documents means that user can open those files directly from Explorer and other apps easily. In addition, for all platforms it makes sense to provide two Open items in File menu: Open System ... Open User ... or just Open ...
