I used to use wdstatus all the time for long running processes in J6 and it worked great and would tell me if something was going on and where the process was.
I am not sure what you do in J7 if you have a similar msgs service. smoutput is there but it writes to the log and that is not so good for this purpose. alert is there but not good for this either.
