As I mentioned in my earlier post plugins don't care about where prefs are 
stored. They just tell SC7 to set/get a preference. Thus it never knew where 
the preferences were stored, SC7 is taking care of them. No need to the plugin 
is required for this change.

That is _very_ odd. You said you had a SC7 before. Is it possible this was one 
of the very early version from more than about two months ago? Was this a 
version which was still called SlimServer? The installation path is stored in 
the registry. This file path is used by the installer, assuming it's doing an 
update. But this must have been a version in flux, when it was already 
registering the registry key under squeezecenter, but still installing in a 
slimserver folder.

The tray icon should verify the setting before it's opening the page. I'm not 
sure what's wrong here. But I wonder whether your installation is somewhat 
mixed up. Do you still have a prefs folder in c:\program files\slimserver?
