Just to report back that my problem was indeed a IP conflict issue. For some reason the SBC wanted to pull down an IP address which was already allocated to another device. Solved by using the Router to allocate a static IP and switching off all devices until the SBC had connected.
Still having a few problems selecting the music source with the new pre-production controller - it seems only to be available intermittently as others have mentioned.
