In the new scanner, you can move forward by holding the up botton (SB3)
or turning the wheel (Controller) and this accelerates some.  You can
also, once the scanner is engaged, hold the fwd/rev buttons down, which
I believe accelerates more quickly - although I would like its upper
bound to be faster.  And, on the controller, its nicer to hold the
button for a long skip than trying to keep the wheel spinning.  I get
close that way, then fine tune with up/down or the wheel.

For a number of reasons, its really necessary to keep the scanner
display up for a while once its engaged.  Among others, it shows you
that the special key defs of the scanner mode are in force.
