Back when I was gainfully employed in the computer industry, a three
tier application like SAP or the Squeezebox system ran its database
(Oracle, SQ Lite, etc) on a "DB Server" , application (Squeezecenter) on
an "Application Server" and the GUI on a PC. If tiers one and two - DB
Server and Application Server were on the one box like Squeezecenter,
then the box was called an "Application Server" or just plain "Server".
The software was never called "xxxx Server" by the vendors, rather it
was called by a single name for marketing purposes and for the techos it
was referred to as a software suite or "xxx Software". So, using
industry conventions, the hardware is a Server and the software would be
Squeezebox Software Suite (which consists of the Scanner, Squeezecenter,
Tray Tool, plugins etc).
Which is a long winded way of saying that Logitec should stick with
calling its Squeezebox software Squeezecenter rather than misnaming it
"Squeezebox Server".
However, if the marketing types get their way and the software becomes
"Squeezebox Server" running on a box that a lot of us would refer to as
a "Squeezebox Server" then I think we will have to refer to the software
as "Squeezebox Software" or "SB S/W".
