I was neither here nor there on SqueezeCenter (except that as a Canuck I thought it should be spelled "SqueezeCentre").
However, Wirrunna made some good points about some of the weaknesses with "Squeezebox Server". Servers are hardware, conceptually. I refer to the box that runs SqueezeCenter as my "music server", as opposed to the other servers that live in the basement beside it. At least the name Slimserver concatenated "server" with something else. When I think about it, prompted by some of the posts in this thread, calling the software currently called SqueezeCenter "Squeezebox Server" is odd by industry standards. I can't think of any biggie that embeds "server" in the product name: Apache; Oracle; MySQL; Websphere. Even Microsoft IIS, which formerly was Internet Information Server, was revised to be Internet Information Services at some point, and everybody just uses the acronym anyway. If the marketing dudes want "Squeezebox" as part of the name, well, I guess they get paid to do marketing and have their reasons, or at least have to appear to be busy when headcounts are being reduced. Of course, they already seemed to have moved towards product line continuity by using the word "squeeze" as part of the name of SqueezeCenter, and it's easier to add one syllable than two to other words. You want your product names to be easy to say. Squeezebox Antidisestablishmentarianist won't cut it. If it has to have "squeezebox" in it, how about SqueezeboxApp or SqueezeboxServe to reduce the syllable count and avoid possible confusion caused by having the word "server" attached? (BTW, is the Transporter going to be renamed SuperSqueezebox or some such? UberSqueezebox? MegaSqueezebox?) -- stephenkca ------------------------------------------------------------------------ stephenkca's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7820 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64453 _______________________________________________ beta mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
