I'm one of those users who almost only uses my transporter to play music from my own library. And I think I'm not the only one. I find it occasionally nice to play with internet radio because it's there and I have a good internet connection, but that's all.
As others have said, an internet connection should not be necessary, even during setup. It should be possible to download the latest server software (including the firmware) somewhere else and setup your device and play your own library music without any internet connection. Actually, this weekend I just installed a new duet at a friends place. He doesn't have internet there (his weekend house) and it just worked (I had all the necessary stuff on disc).
