Matt, You're a being given feedback from past customers. People who helped make the company viable by choosing to spend their disposable income on your products. I hope you have enough of them to be able to afford to turn away their future business.
I can understand the logic of needing a signin to update firmware, but for those who neither want to, or can't (not all people have broadband), the dialog should have an option to skip to the next page. I can't believe that that option is not possible.
