Sorry MC, I was so pleased I'd cleared my empty genres (agree a side issue) and rushing to a meeting, I wasn't thorough in my test regime.
Net upshot, on SBC, Radio and iPeng browse to Genres/Various Artists then PLAY produces nothing as you originally described. Agree with your separation into two bugs. However bug 1 (getting nothing) appears more complex to me:- If I select a genre (with no Various Artists) and then expand an Artist from that list, I am presented with all albums by that Artist even though only 1 album is tagged with the chosen genre. Consistently with this, if I press play at the Artist (under genre) I get all tracks by the artist (in alphabetical order of Album) irrespective of Genre. This is consistent with expanding Various Artists under Genre, but not All Albums which shows only the albums tagged to that genre. I can see (though I do not agree with) a case that says playing or expanding an Artist should give all their work, ignoring how you navigated to that Artist. Whether this behaviour is a bug or not, if Various Artists is treated consistently then pressing play at Various Artists under a genre would attempt to create a playlist of all compilation tracks. This fails or produces nothing if you select Artists/Various Artists and choose play.
