I think this is a lot bigger question, the question is really if SBS
want to support browsing of classical music. The current browse menus
are focused at pop/rock music with the result that browsing classical
music works but not as good as it could.
It might sound as simple as just adding a "Browse Composers" and
"Browse Conductors" menu but I'm not sure that will make it a lot
better than today for people with a lot of classical music. Classical
music lovers also want a "Work" concept where the "Browse Composers"
and "Browse Conductors" menus would browse into "Works" instead of into
"Albums". "Albums" and "Works" are two completely different things in
classical music. Often you also want to start by selecting the composer
and then selecting a conductor or soloist so I'm not sure a simple
Composers/Albums/Tracks and Conductors/Albums/Tracks menu would be very
useful.
My personal thoughts are:
- People that mostly listens to classical music won't be satisfied with
a simple "browse composers" and "browse conductors" menu with the
standard <Contributor Role>/Albums/Tracks hierarchy.
- People with mostly pop/rock music can just tag their composers on the
few classical albums they have as ARTIST tags. Tagging them as ARTIST
isn't a big issue for these people as they really don't care and just
want to be able to find their few classical albums.
- The real problem with the current solution is for people that have
50% pop/rock and 50% classical music but I suspect these people are
probably classical music lovers who want more advanced browsing than a
simple "browse composers" and "browse conductors" menu with a flat
<Contributor Role>/Albums/Tracks hierarchy.
I think a separate "Browse Conductors" and "Browse Composers" menu
would be a step in the right direction but to make it really useful we
also need to change the hierarchy in these menus to something else than
<Contributor Role>/Albums/Tracks. The problem is that it's going to be
hard to decide on another hierarchy because you want different
hierarchies in different situations, sometimes:
- Composers/Conductors/Works/Tracks
and sometimes:
- Composers/Soloist/Works/Tracks
and sometimes:
- Composers/Works/Conductors/Tracks
and sometimes:
- Composers/Works/Soloist/Tracks
The list could be made a lot longer, so what we really need is the
flexible browsing feature which is sometimes requested.
However, it would be interesting to hear from someone who have a lot of
classical music in their library, I've just seen their wishes and needs
during my Custom Scan/Custom Browse plugin development.
My personal advice would be to not change anything before you have
analyzed the needs from people with a lot of classical music where the
current solution is a big problem.
