I completely agree, the question is just if it's worth taking baby
steps in one direction before you have decided which way you want to
move in the future. I've no idea where Logitech is moving in the future
but I'm pretty sure advanced flexible browsing isn't part of the plan,
they probably want to focus on the mass market where flexible browsing
is less important.
In my mind it's not a big issue for people that doesn't listen to
classical music because they just uncheck the "Composer" and
"Conductor" checkboxes, so it's not worth doing a baby step for this
user category, even if it's fairly easy. I suspect this user category
covers most of the Squeezebox owners and this is also why composers and
conductors haven't been a focus area so far.
If we want to do something for composers and conductors we should make
sure that we do it in a way that somewhat satisfies classical music
listeners.
I'd personally vote for the solution with separate top level menus and
keep the current settings but make them control if the top level menus
should be visible or not.
Ideally I'd want something more flexible, maybe similar to what
MrSinatra tries to describe, but unfortunately I'm pretty sure
something like that requires more work than Logitech is willing to
invest.
As a side note, the third party API's in the onebrowser branch offers a
bit better support for third party menus in this area compared to what
we currently have. In 7.5 you need to re-implement user interface in
the third party plugin while in the onebrowser branch you just need to
provide the data and the user interface is handled by SBS standard
code. It still requires a lot of code to provide a third party
composers menu but it's a little bit easier in the onebrowser branch
compared to 7.5 and earlier releases. I'm not saying that third party
menus is the solution, I'm just saying that the chance to getting third
party menus with the same look and feel as the standard menus is better
in the onebrowser branch.
