A current version of SQLite. There have been quite a few releases that
improve performance over the last few years -
https://sqlite.org/changes.html .

I did run a quick test on my 4 years old MacBook Pro. I was able to compile the latest library without any major issue. That's good news. But I didn't see any significant (or even measurable!) difference in scanning my test library of about 6k tracks. I run the scan twice with the old, twice with the new version. Three out of these four times it ended in exactly 64 seconds. The fourth time it took 66s - but this time I did open the status page to see the progress of the scan...

We really must have a good understanding of what we try to improve. Scan times probably aren't good enough a reason to update the SQLite version. What other tasks would you expect to take advantage of an updated SQLite?

I'll try to run the same test on a different configuration where disk IO is known to be slow. It might give us a different view.
