Not unless you manually install CPAN modules for mysql and manually
change server.prefs file.

I don't think you actually have to change any code, installing DBD for
MySQL and changing server.prefs file manually is probably enough to make
it work.
However, before adding it back someone with a large library needs to
verify that it actually improves the situation also in 7.8. There might
be improvements in the code since last time we did a test so the
differences we saw back then might not exist in 7.8.
