Meh. I ain't hot on Settlers, even as a gateway game. Ticket is pretty nonthreatening, and I tend to go with that initially to dispel the demons of "wow, this isn't pure shit like Monopoly was!".
Then, I like to close in with one of three things: 1) Thebes - awesome, awesome mechanic that will have 3 other adults chanting SAND! SAND! SAND! at someone else. The game is lengthy, however, at around 2 hours or slightly more. 2) Adel Verpflichtet - I like the chaos and the simultaneous action selection, and the rock-paper-scissors stuff is pretty easy to understand. The game is also quick, clocking in at an hour and a half, tops. 3) Bang!, for the more adventurous, and if you have 6 or more folks including yourself around. Bang! tends to separate the honest-to-god gamer enthusiasts, budding ones and otherwise, from the more casual lot. The learning curve is a bit higher, but I like the reward in secret roles/goals, and the simple fun in blasting away at each other.
