my advice on gateway games that you have to play in, is to play games you want to play.
i used to try to be very cautious in my game introductions, but often i find people would get bored with well boring games. i tend to use modern art as a intro game, it's fun, it's interactive and typically different for new players. Thebes is another one i like to introduce people to, as the digging element tends to be 'fun' for people as well.
