You mean send an XMLHTTPRequest back to the server to check the site
status?
That isn't free.  Part of the upgrades they're working on are to
address bandwith concerns.

If they're redirecting to a page instead of changing the home page
out, there's a good chance they don't want us constantly hitting the
server while its down.
