The ADS site says some of the Bibtex entries do need editing, but since the preview seems to be choking on entries like {\apjs} I'm pretty sure
the problem in this case is not having the right style available.

The SO/ADS site also says it uses the AASTeX package, which appears to
be installed on my system.

What I don't know is how Bibdesk calls Latex to render the preview.

So I don't know what to change in order to make the style available.

In other words, is it a Latex config problem or a Bibdesk one?

Edit BibDesk's TeX preview template to include the appropriate macros; there should be a button to open that file in BibDesk's TeX preview preference pane. This message indicates that aas_macros.sty could be used to silence this error, if you don't want to drag in all of AASTeX:

Best is to put .sty files in a standard location where tex can find

it. However where this is depends on your tex distribution... in my

case it's in ~/Library/texmf/tex.

~/Library/texmf/tex/latex/misc has what appears to be the standard set
of .sty files, including the natbib.sty used by the AASTeX package.

I also have what appears to be the same .sty files available under the
directory /usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-dist/tex/latex/...

How did you end up with natbib.sty in ~/Library? Typically that would be installed in /usr/local/texlive, unless you've installed a different version for some reason. Typically, files in ~/Library/ texmf will override the ones in /usr/local/texlive, which can lead to compatibility problems when updating your TeX install.
