Yes, thanks, that does work.  I had just found that out before reading 
your message.  I replaced the first line of the preview template, ie

\documentclass[letterpaper]{article}

with

\documentstyle[aas_macros]{article}

That may not be elegant, but it works, with no error messages.

I copied it there while exploring what would be found, and where.
