I struck problems with the Latex preview a while back. One of the problems had to do with the character encoding. Try changing the Tex preview character encoding eg to UTF-8 via Preferences > Tex Preview. Although the abstract field is not used in the default Tex preview, it does affect the rendering of the preview.
