I can see where the clipping/unclipping would work -- except that's not the sort of thing that I like to do when riding the fixie.
The best luck I've had with bike-noise to alert peds to my presence has been either rapid back-pedalling (when riding the derailered bike) or the banshee-like screech the emanated from the brake on the fixie before I replaced the blocks.
But even the ratcheting pawls of a back-pedalled freewheel will startle some people -- as I found to my great suprise not too many days ago.
