The West Campus Utility Project is a pain for everyone involved, for sure. The thought is that, by doing this now...it will mean that these roads won't need to be torn up again for 10-15 years...instead of pretty much every year...for utility maintenance. At every step a good deal of thought is being given to traffic diversion plans and the impacts on bikes/peds. People are thinking about it and trying their best to make it work as well as possible. Which isn't to say that things go perfectly at all times.

I think they've done a reasonable job, but there's some odd inconsistencies. The initial message to UWHC employees indicated that the temporary path leading from Highland over to Observatory Drive was a bike/ped path. However, the path is a bit narrow for both bikes and pedestrians to use, and it "opens out" onto the sidewalk in front of WARF, leaving a cyclist on the sidewalk (where I shouldn't be) and trying to figure out how to properly rejoin Observatory Drive or go up Walnut to Linden Drive in order to continue eastward. Signage indicating that it's meant for both bikes and pedestrians would be good so that both parties are aware.

UWHC isn't probably who you should contact about parking violations...Transportation Services Field Services is. Actually, they've been checking on moped parking on a weekly

UWHC Security indicated to me that TS doesn't always get around to checking, so they call in obvious violations when they see it. Also, when I'm running into the building to get going with my day, it's a lot easier to flag down a security officer than to call TS.

basis...and the reports in general have been good. There is 95% compliance with the new moped parking permit after only a year. The problems at the Hospital are probably due to the confusion over the construction.

I think it started that way, but at least a couple of the scooters are actually "repeat offenders", so they're owned by employees, not visitors. I don't know if they've been there in the last 3-4 weeks, though -- I've been at UWHC only intermittently, and now that I'm back there on a daily basis, I'm parking in another covered area that most people don't seem to know about yet, :-)

I had suggested putting up "no scooters" signs in that area like in the areas on the open sidewalk between UWHC and the HSLC, but I don't know if that went anywhere.

Thanks for the info...

Peace and Prosperity,
Dipesh
