Another episode from the Way-Back Machine:

For a time in the lawless West of Summit County, CO, I used thread to
tie a ski pole with a sharp carbide tip onto my handlebar, so the tip
stuck out about 2 feet beyond the left handlebar. I then tied a few
strips of tree flagging onto the basket. Using thread, I guessed, might
allow the pole to break away in the event I ever was brushed. I'm glad
I never had occasion to find out, and I later heard that was one of a
number of theatrical episodes that helped convince the county to
construct the very nice bike trail from Breckenridge to Dillon
Reservoir.

That kept the drivers at bay pretty well and also got them to slow down
on the highway - though based upon past experience I remain sure it was
only because most drivers were not so much concerned with my safety, but
they sure as snow did not want to get their pick-up trucks and Volvo
wagons scratched.

        Subject: [Bikies] Advocacy Campaign Idea

Both a coworker & I both were surprised, for some reason, to
learn that a yard was 3 feet. I knew that but it still surprised me...
Well, our coworker who mentioned it brought in yard sticks for me & her
to help us visualize, etc.

So, what I'm thinking for a advocacy campaign would be to have
yard sticks made w/the BFW info & a website for folks to reference. We
could hand them out, similar to what they do @ home shows. This would be
a great way for folks to physically see the distance they're supposed to
provide & a yard stick can still be useful.

Just an idea & I think they'd be somewhat cheap to make since
they're often handed out for free @ places (i.e. home shows, carpet
stores, hardware stores, etc.). We could check...
