As silly as the stick idea is to imagine, the easiest
thing to do is stick your arm out to the side. A rule
of thumb (or forearm as this case may be) is that the
arm-spread of a person is pretty close to the height. 
Since I'm conveniently six-feet tall (in my youthful
vigor), sticking an arm out to my side is pert near
three feet from my neck. So, if you can touch the
vehicle next to you, you're too close. And if you
don't want a driver to ring your neck, stay of the
driver's reach.
