Dear Group, We have expressed opinions about red light cameras and lights in general before on this site. In this exchange today, I was surprised to see two views and the revelation that "side impact" was a "controlled statistic telling only part of the story."
Until, say a decade ago, Ripon, a city with at least three major State Highways passing through, had no stop lights. I cannot remember any accidents at any of these corners controlled with stop signs. And if there might be a complaint about time loss with just stop signs, I contend it was just the opposite. Within a twenty-four hour period, I would expect more time is lost waiting for lights to change on an otherwise empty street. One could leave "lights open" or red and yellow, but then one has guaranteed high speed in one direction and more danger than simple stop signs. And with four-ways stops, under heavy traffic, there are few spaces between cars and they are all passing through at a controlled speed. There are no cars passing through at forty. No SUVs and semi tractors squashing thousand pound cars. Sadly, the process in only in one direction with government, Federal, state or local.
