Back in 1993, when the bike path was built, Arthur Ross acknowledged that the
button to trigger a red light for Atwood (the ped button) was on the wrong side
of the bike path (I'm talking about the intersection of Dunning and Atwood) if
a bicyclist going westbound tried to trigger it. So if they were to go to
press the ped button to get a green for Dunning, they would potentially be
risking a head-on collision with a bike riding eastbound. Arthur also promised
to put installing automatic triggers in the bike path to get a green for
Dunning on the city's work plan, as the city had done farther west where the
bike path crosses Winnebago (at Riverside). I don't know whether it ever got
on the work plan, but 15 years later, nothing has been done.

This is a problem city wide. Rectifying it is a priority in our
neighborhood plan (Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather). The plan is now 8
years old and nothing has been done about it. In fact, they just
installed brand new walk light push buttons, just as inaccessible as
ever, and just as inconveniently activated. In fact, if you are able
to mount the snowbank and push the light button, the walk light will
not activate for the next light cycle. You must wait for the 2nd
light cycle. And now you understand why pedestrians habitually ignore
walk lights.

I have had conversations with individuals in Traffic Engineering
about this. The engineers believe that pedestrians are 2nd class
citizens, undeserving of convenient access.

(Let's watch the TE folks dance around this one!)
