In some cases, yes. It depends primarily on your fork,
and your front brake. As has been said around the
shop, "You gotta have clearance, Clarance." Your fork
may fit to tightly over the top of the tire or your
brake may wrap too tightly around the tire.
To the best of my knowledge, the narrowest studded
700c tire is stamped as being 32mm wide. Keep in mind
that the short knobs on the tire, which are there both
for added traction and to serve as a god sturdy
location to hold the studs, also create a tire which
is a little wider and taller than your average 32mm.
Now that we know the size of the smallest studded
tire, the next thing to determine is the max tire size
your bicycle was designed to accommodate. There are
some general rules-of-thumb here about certain types
of frames and what they are likely to offer in terms
of clearance but a lack of standards in the industry
combined with the fact that it may be a difference of
a mere 4 or 5mm between having the proper clearance
and not, may make it difficult to determine on your
own without trial and error.
The best way to go about determining if your bike can
accept the tires and or fenders you are interested in
is to take it on in to your favorite local bike shop
and ask a mechanic to check it out for you. Any shop
worth it's salt will gladly help you make this
determination at no charge.
