As someone who has not only ridden many winters on
basic-steel studs but also sells bike parts, and
accessories for a living, I have to insist that
basic-steel studs are not worthless and are, in fact,
worth their cost -- which is notably less than the,
admittedly superior, carbide variety. Now, I know I
said this just a few weeks ago but it bears repeating
-- particularly in the face of sweeping statements
like Scott's.

To sum up: Carbide studs do perform better than basic
steel, no question about it. They are also markedly
more expensive. Basic steel studs do work well for the money.
