To sum up: Carbide studs do perform better than basic

While I agree that steel studs are not worthless, I think they are a
poor value. With care you MIGHT get steel-studded tires through 2
winters before the studs are worn out. My carbide studded tires are
finally worn out after 8 winters, and not because the studs are worn,
but because the sidewalls are cracked pretty badly (which I blame
partially on the high UV exposure those tires got over three winters
living at high elevation (7,000 ft) the bike having been stored out in
the sun the whole time).
Seeing as the carbide studded tires cost roughly double what steel
studded tires cost, but last AT LEAST four times longer, the carbide
studded tires are a much better value.
