Troy, I left a message with the construction manager for DNR (John
Olson) asking if he has heard anything more rosy than Darin's news
articles, that would allow him to set a schedule for this project. I
also heard that some people have been riding the Fitchburg segment on
fat tires and maybe even wider touring tires.

John's message says he'll be back in his Fitchburg office this
afternoon, so you may be able to get in touch with him before he
responds to my inquiry:

For the time being, the Badger State Trail Web page posts a recommended
route to get to the north end of the completed section:

The current legislative majority is not exactly blessed with foresight
and wisdom, to say the least. Last weekend I indulged in some
ecotourism when a few of "us" bike-toured all around the "Amish Country"
of Green Lake and Columbia counties. We spread vast amounts of cultural
and economic good will, requiring copious amounts of lard-fried donuts,
pecan rolls, fresh strawberries, jam, bread, etc. It was great fun to
greet the Amish folks we passed (or in a few cases were passed by) in
their horse-drawn buggies. The little kids we met on farms and at
farmstead bakeries seemed very enchanted by our bicycles. This similar
kind of experience could be enjoyed more readily by Dane County families
seeking economic relief from their gas-sucking vans if that last 7 miles
of the Badger Trail were completed.

In case anyone happens to be contemplating a cycle trip in Green Lake
County in the near future, bridges are out on Co. Hwys B, and BB, each
about one mile west of WI 73 and 2 - 2 1/2 miles south of the west end
of the one and only (Big) Green Lake. These flood wash-outs had not
been listed on the county's web site that bears a bunch of flood-related
information they did post. We managed to cross the once-again-meek creek
responsible for flushing the bridges downstream at both locations,
without major problems. It was a lot of fun, in fact..,

Just wondering...any known date as to when the northernmost portion of
that trail will be done...I haven't been on but had friends who did
yesterday and thought it would be great...it would make sense to get it
connected to Fitchburg asap.
