In the great scheme of things, $30 for a light IS cheap, especially if you want
anything that's practical to see the road with. In urban situations where there
are street lights, one can see the street by the light of street lights - sort
of. But the real danger is not being seen by other vehicles like cars and other
cyclists. For that a light must be used. Anything that is non-reflective and
darker than a light gray would be nearly invisible except as a silhouette. As
such, I have a $100 light to see the road and potholes and a small $12 blinking
light on my helmut to be seen by others. Not to mention reflectors, reflecting
strips, and tail lights. I'm spooked and angered by stealth cyclists and I
prefer not to be one. My safety is worth more than $30 dollars.
