I've had that happen to me a few times. That means I carry a multi-tool with a 
folding knife.At one time I have wanted to see if I can utilize the repurposed 
bungee cord as a spring-loaded reverse gear but I don't think the pedestrians 
behind me would have appreciated the concept.

Do you have any bungee cord horror stories you'd like to share?

I use a stretchable "cargo net" on the back of my bike.  It works well
when I'm careful, but when I'm not, it hooks itself on my rear spokes and
winds tightly around the axle -- not pretty.

Maybe I should switch to nylon straps.
