If Old Middleton is closed and Old Sauk is intimidating, the best alternative might be to ride to Hilldale one way or another, and then go South on Segoe Road and then continue west on Regent or South Hill (depending on your preference). After Garner Park, the route gets complicated, but it is marked as a bike route most of the way, so you should be able to find it on the city Bike Map.

Usually, I would take: *University Avenue to Babcock Drive *L on Linden to the East Campus Bike Path (the new path next to Campus Drive, with the solar lights) *then, through Shorewood Hills (following Marshall Court, various bike paths past the swimming pool, to Locust Drive) to the Blackhawk Bike Path *then, along Old Middleton Road to Stonefield Road *then L on Gammon Road to Old Sauk Road *then, finally, R on Old Sauk Road. If you have stronger legs than me, you might prefer to omit the Stonefield/Gammon leg and turn L from Old Middleton to Old Sauk. I could take University and Old Sauk most of the way, but I've heard that there are backstreet routes that avoid some of the hills and fast-moving auto traffic on Old Sauk.
