Too bad Dave Zweifel took an either or, rails or trails, perspective. Rails

I think Dave was concerned about the decision to tear up the tracks. At the time the decision was made, coexistence of bikes and rail was not one of the considered options. The choice was whether to preserve the ROW or sell it back to land owners. Given the times, the right decision was made.

What I'm concerned about is the preservation of the return-to-rails option. The East Verona Ave interchange with Verona Road violates the rail ROW, and will require extensive rerouting of roads to return rail to that corridor. Likewise the Sugar River trail circumnavigates a subdivision that was built over the rail ROW. Be on guard if anyone propose to "reroute" a bike trail that was once a rail ROW. That's why I oppose rerouting of the Military Ridge/Cannonball Trails south of PD/McKee Rd in Fitchburg. It seem of little consequence to run bikers a few hundred feet out of their way, until you image rail service returning to the corridor!
