The signs on E. Mifflin say "<symbol of a bicyclist> May Use Full Lane". I would think that that means anyone passing a bicyclist (except, perhaps, another bicyclist) should use the other lane, and be sure there isn't oncoming traffic, just as one would on a two-lane rural road passing another car. And I would think this would apply whether passing one cyclist or two, since, by going entirely into the other lane, it really doesn't matter if the passing vehicle is passing one cyclist or two. Yes, Ronald & Son should have "singled up" upon hearing (or seeing in the mirror) the overtaking car, but the driver of that car should have moved into the other lane in any event. Either move would have resolved the issue. (Both would have been an "only in Madison" thing, I suppose....)

On the subject, I have, at times, had to use the oncoming lane on E. Mifflin while passing other cyclists on my bicycle. Either they're riding two abreast, or one is riding well out into the lane (usu. rightfully so, avoiding hazards to one's right). I don't see why I shouldn't be allowed to pass in such a situation, provided I move into the other lane.

Yes, cars are allowed to pass bicyclists on a bike boulevard, although they

Bike boulevards are still local streets. The same rules apply as any other
street.

Ideally, "bike boulevards" would not be needed, because all users would
recognize the rights of all other users to share the road in a safe manner.
On any road in the state of Wisconsin, unless bicycles are banned, a
bicyclist may use the entire lane if there is not sufficient space for a
car and bike to safely share the lane. At the same time, bicyclists must
single up (not ride side-by-side) if riding double would obstruct traffic.
Presumably, Wilson St, being very lightly traveled, should allow bicyclists
to ride side by side and still allow cars behind to pass.

I have a question regarding the bike boulavard. The other day I was riding
with my son side by side when I was suprised by a car that passed us, I
left my son at the next intersection and caught up with the car at a
stoplight on Willy street. Before I had a chance to say anything the female
passenger got very defensive telling me that it was a shared road and that
I shouldn't "start anything".

The driver stated that he passed in a safe manner as he is allowed to do,
although I disagree that it was safe, and the driver also stated that he
was a biker and I should get over it.

Although I think they were ass-holes I must admit that I am unsure who was
right and simply stated that my kid was with me.

So is a driver allowed to pass a bike on the boulevard, should he give a
warning before doing so? I have medical issues that some times affect my
ability to not wobble when I ride so I am a little sensitive about being
passed in such a manner. Thanks.
