Quick report from the Open House: I got there around 5:30. Attendance while I was there was probably about 5-10 people passing through at a time, with an equal or greater number of DNR and Toole Design staff being around to answer questions. There were several stations, showing the planned bike corridors (State and USBRS), the existing trail network in Wisconsin and how the two align or don't align. Additional stations asked attendants to prioritize different aspects of what makes a good bike route - grade, services, directness, traffic volume, ??. Then there was a big map of Wisconsin where people could draw on-road routes that they thought might make good candidates for a bike route. An online version of that map that allows commenting from the comfort of your couch is available at http://wikimapping.net/wikimap/WI_Bikeways,html Finally, there were open comment forms that also asked if people would be interested in being part of a focus group.
Content-wise, I'm not familiar enough with the state to say much about the proposed corridors. The one thing that did strike me as odd is the corridor from Madison going south to the IL border. Instead of using the existing Badger State trail, the corridor goes southeast to Beloit, where it doesn't connect to anything. The other important thing to note is a) these corridors, once adopted, won't lead to any changes on the ground. Things like signage are the responsibility of local communities who may or may not do anything. b) this open house was only for three corridors; there is a fourth corridor, but the process for that is done by another company/agency(?). I'll post some pictures of the different stations later. Harald.
