For me it's exactly what rpaolino said: "I wasn't aware that the sound was a turn signal, I thought it had something to do with indicating its arrival or departure from a bus stop."
The only time I've noticed the beep is when playing leapfrog with buses, usually on Old University. I thought the buses were beeping to signal their arrival at a bus stop. If it has a safety benefit, I want to be respectful of that. But to me, it's noise pollution. And what Grant said makes intuitive sense: when a bus strikes someone walking or biking, how often is it because the victim could not see the bus? More likely, the driver did not see the victim, and struck the person without giving them time to react.
