Homemade signs are a whole different issue in my mind. The bigger problem is the fact that our local Traffic Engineers continue to put stop and yield signs up at path crossings. This issue has been raised over and over again on listservs and will continue to cause mass confusion and varied interpretation as long as we continue this approach. The law gives right of way to cyclists and peds in the crosswalk and also requires them to not dart out in front of traffic making it difficult to stop. That's really not that hard. Putting up Stop and Yield signs for path users creates enormous confusion for those users as well as vehicle operators on the cross streets and is not consistent with the legal treatment of crosswalks. You have a fair number of road users that really don't realize they should be yielding to people on bikes and you have path users that really don't realize that they should be afforded the right of way. This leads to vehicle operators not yielding (and honking anxiously at other operators who do) and path users who refuse to cross even when vehicles have yielded--waving them on angrily instead.
Take down the Stop and Yield signs and replace them with caution signs where needed to help reinforce the need for caution for path users. And come up with a version of the "State Law Yield to Peds in Crosswalk" signs that includes the word "Bike or Cyclist" and a picture of a person on a bike.
