Thank you so much for helping me out! I created
a .password-file in lotta's home directory and gave
it the right permission and owners, and it did the
trick. I am now able to login as lotta.

I have no idea why this password package is used (checkpw),
but I will swap to checkpassword immediately. Am I correct
that the only place to change this is in the xinetd run file,
changing from /bin/checkpw to /bin/checkpassword?

As a matter of fact there is no /bin/checkpw at all!? Strange.
